CoverDad Method
The DIFE Method
DIFE is an educational framework for estimating how much life insurance a household might need. It stands for Debt, Income, Final expenses, Education. You add up the four buckets and you have a starting estimate you can talk through.
How does the DIFE method work?
DIFE adds four numbers that are specific to your household: the debts you'd leave behind, the income your family depends on, the final expenses your estate would face, and any education costs you'd want to help cover. The total is an estimated coverage need — a conversation starter, not a recommendation, a quote, or an offer of coverage. Your actual price and eligibility are determined by a carrier's underwriting, and a licensed CoverDad agent can walk through it with you.
Debt
Add up what your family would still owe: mortgage, car loans, student loans, and credit card balances. The idea is that the debts you leave behind don't become their problem.
Income
A common starting assumption is 10 times your annual gross income. That's a rule of thumb, not a rule — it's meant to give your family time to regroup without an immediate income cliff. Adjust it up or down based on how many working years your household actually depends on.
Final Expenses
Estimate funeral and burial or cremation costs, any outstanding medical bills, and the administrative and legal costs of settling an estate. Funeral costs in particular vary widely by service type and region, so use figures for your own area rather than a national average.
Education
If you want to help fund school for your kids, estimate what that would cost for the schools you have in mind. Published tuition and fees differ enormously between in-state public, out-of-state public, and private institutions.
Stay-at-home parent?
A parent without a paycheck still does work that costs money to replace. In place of the Income line, estimate what your household would actually pay for childcare, cooking, transportation, and household management using local rates for your own area.
What DIFE doesn't do
DIFE doesn't tell you which product to buy, what your premium will be, or whether a carrier will approve you. It also doesn't account for everything — existing savings, employer coverage, a surviving spouse's income, and Social Security survivors benefits can all change the picture. Pricing depends on age, health, tobacco use, coverage amount, term length, state, and underwriting, so an actual quote is the only reliable way to know your cost.
Hypothetical example
A dad wants to size a rough estimate. He adds his remaining mortgage balance and car loan for D, multiplies his gross salary by 10 for I, adds a figure for funeral and estate-settlement costs in his area for F, and adds what he'd like to put toward each kid's schooling for E. The four numbers together give him an estimated coverage need he can bring to an agent.
The figures are his own, not ours. Two dads with the same income can land in very different places depending on debt, family size, and what they want to fund.
